Victorian rental safety
Key safety checks for Victorian rental properties
Smoke alarms require an annual safety check. Electrical and gas safety checks follow a two-year cycle, with the requirements expanding to all rental agreements from 13 October 2026.
Electrical safety
Electrical installations and fittings must be checked by a licensed electrician every two years. From 13 October 2026, this applies to all rental agreements.
Gas safety
Where a gas safety check is required, it must be carried out every two years by an appropriately qualified gasfitter. From 13 October 2026, the requirement extends to all rental agreements.
