Key requirements
- Install alarms on every storey and in every bedroom.
- Install alarms in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home. Where there is no hallway, place them in the connecting room; on a storey without bedrooms, place one on the path to the exit.
- Use photoelectric alarms that comply with AS 3786-2014, are interconnected and are less than 10 years old.
- Power alarms by mains electricity or a non-removable 10-year battery, as applicable.
- For rentals, test and clean alarms within 30 days before a tenancy starts or renews, and replace flat or nearly flat batteries where applicable.
